Robert McCrum and and linguist Robert Phillipson discuss “Globish,” the English used as a global language. They explain the difference between pidgins, creoles and this phenomenon. In their discussion of English as a lingua franca, they point out that in many parts of the world, this use creates a power imbalance between those who have access to education and those who don’t, for example. As Dr. Phillipson explains, “Any language can serve good or evil purposes.” Also note the concerns of callers who worry that (1) young people’s use of Standard Arabic is deteriorating and (2) too many English words are creeping into their other languages. Dr. Phillipson recommends that multilingual education policies be adapted so that minority language groups are encouraged to keep their own language.
