The languages that are most frequently spoken on this planet have often gained their status by pushing other languages out. Many of the colonial languages have effectively killed indigenous languages that they came into contact with.
Linguists are doing what they can to try to document and preserve those that are left, but it’s more effective when the communities themselves are invested in the process.
