The general public tends to put language arts and sciences into opposing categories, so students who are new to linguistics are often surprised to see so many quantitative studies. Some are pleasantly surprised; others need a little more encouragement in order to embrace this new approach to language. Regardless, if they’re doing a quantitative study, it’s nice for them to be able to do some basic statistics. Unfortunately, most students don’t have these installed on their computers already.
